This band changed my view of the anarchist punk scene. I have a habit of question everything, including my own beliefs, and this band slapped me in face when it came to believing in pacifist, anarchist punk and woke me up. As much as Andy hates The apostles, I love it.

I remember these sleeves well -- I'd left punk behind by the time, but I still found the sleeves interesting, in that they stopped people from drifting off into a passive 'hippy' stoner state of mind. I wasn't into the music, but I remember most of the people I knew from that scene to be pretty decent and good people, and quite open minded too -- I remember lots of these guys ( the bands and the audience ) also being into psychedelia, dub, funk and jazz.

The sleeve art/ideas seem to be heavily influenced by Larry Law's work, which is no bad thing of course, and now I look at them about two decades later, I wish more people were doing these kinds of things in the 21st C rather than submitting to corporate drivel.

I knew Andy Martin very well in the early 1980s, being a frequent visitor to his home in Stoke Newington, as well as sharing a flat with him in Hoxton a couple of years later.

Andy was very much in the mould of the self-educated working-class Londoner and outsider. The kind of man who you would see sitting in the corner of the caff filling in The Times crossword, or who would deploy some quote from Plato to make a point at a council tenants' association meeting.

He had an unpredictable temper, along with with a powerful and strange personality. My impression was that self-definition for him was a struggle, and that all his artistic efforts reflected a continual process of uncomfortable metamorphosis, like someone trying on every pair of trousers in a shop, and never finding one that quite fitted right.

But he was a fascinating individual, full of knowledge about the widest range of subjects, and an excellent conversationalist. I haven't seen him for many years, but there are times when I miss his company.

Brilliant stuff! I've only heard 'Smash the Spectacle', the cover texts were actually more interesting than the music (though the lyrics were superb), but would love to hear more of their stuff...especially 'Equinox Screams', sounds mental...

wicked stuff john, i've got a few apostles records, picked them up in scotland when i was visiting deek from oi polloi many years ago! they were right on the "glueing butchers shop locks" direct action tip and the one song that sticks in my mind was the one about queer bashing, where the anti-hero protagonist realises hes actually gay at the end. top stuff and a real blast from the past. keep it up bwoy!
