well, you always got the sense that The Meteors and King Kurt and everyone else would eventually grow up and slip away into normality whereas The Cramps just ARE The Cramps… you feel they could never escape…. and that’s why they’ve endured…. a friend went to see them about two years ago and Lux was still as mental as ever… jumped off the stage and accidentally swallowed his mic…gargled on blood and amphetamine for the rest of the set…

Not sure I told you about my three degrees of separation Cramps story. When I was living in Luton in the mid-80s there were a couple of Americans sharing a house with a friend of mine who was in Luton Class War. They were in a band called The Veil, and had been in a band with Bryan Gregory after he left The Cramps. Strangely they had moved to England and ended up working in the cinema in Luton. King Kurt and The Meteors have been mentioned above, but they just weren’t in the same league. They always seemed a bit obvious and vaudevillian whereas The Cramps seemed genuinely mysterious if not a little bit scary.

Well you could buy it 2nd hand (i.e. abe, ebay, amazon marketplace), in which case the publisher won’t see any of the money.

I’m not that bothered either way but it’s pretty hard running an independent label or publishing operation these days, so I try and link people up where possible.

Another fond stroll down memory lane. I gotta wonder though, why the exhortations to “support independent publishing”? Where else am I gonna get this stuff and who are you to tell me where to buy anyway? It just occurred to me that all those years of pushing people to buy indie is like a mirror image of Madison Avenue somehow. Dunno if it works or not, I just bought stuff where I wanted to anyway.

excellent post… i was wondering when you’d get round to it… I guess The Cramps are one of the only bands i still regularly listen to that i was listening to at 12/13 (i tend to give King Kurt and The Meteors a miss now…) – for a music so packed with peers, they are oddly peerless… next step: The Gun Club revival!
