Rough In Hackney

The people of Stoke Newington, in the London borough of Hackney – the poorest in England – have lost faith in their police. Allegations of fabricating evidence, gratuitous violence and drug-dealing have blurred the line between law-enforcers and law-breakers.

A spectacularly grim bit of social history from The Independent in 1993.

  1. A strange coincidence. I got round to watching the final episode of Red Riding on Friday and immediately found myself googling the Stoke Newington police station afterwards. There are so many untold stories in there. Remember the police sued the Guardian’s Duncan Campbell over an article on it and the case was chucked out of court. Can’t help but think it is all a bit better hidden now.
