That was a really good head of David show. Id forgotten about the jack Nicholson thing! Much amusement about that in the front row. I think I've got a tape of it somewhere.

But then, I really loved big black.

The Clarendon was a good show. I'd seen them a couple of times before but the Clarendon wa apocalyptic. I got there in the afternoon to watch the sound checks - the cool bands used to allow that at the time. Me and a dozen or so hyper hip freaks in a bubble of ecstasy cos we were watching the best bands around twice in one day.

They were so funky. So tight. A real locked down groove. And some very obvious compassion at the root of the rage. Heartbeat, Jordan minnessota, tiny king of the Jews - fantastic.

I remember some poor guy being pulled out of the mosh pit with blood pouring out of one eye. Happy times! And a sprint to the tube to get last train to upminster. Probably reading a fanzine. I think I reviewed that show for one of them.

1987 was a great year for music. Don't forget that house and dance music had been in full swing for years by then, it was just that e was really hard to get hold of. It was all speed and lots of acid, massed of hash. Really 1988 wouldn't have happened wihout the audience that went to big black, tackhead, sonic youth shows. It was a continuation more than a continuum.

Nice work! I remember seeing them on the same tour, at the ICA, I arrived early, as was my want, to witness a pile of hubcaps portrayed as art :) I was deaf for two days after, only Black Flag had ever succeeded in doing that to me in all my years of gigging - it was so LOUD! Big Black were awesome, but I loved HoD; "Shadowhills" was a massive influence on me...

ah, Albini is an entertaining arse. His piety is amusing - i love watching him holding forth to young bands about being free of corporate taint when his income comes from the studio, not Shellac. Of course you can be purer than thou when you don't need to make a living. As po-faced provocateurs go, he's great value :)

I love Big Black, you lucky olde toade. However, I cannot think of a single person whose opinion I am more indifferent to than Steve Albini, other than possibly my ex-girlfriend's uncle.

Yeah I think a lot of people forgot about the innovations of the mid to late 80s cos of the "year zero" of acid house on the one hand and then maybe Nirvana on the other. Exciting times for sure...

i managed to see most of that crowd - Swans, Killdozer, Buttholes, Ween, Head of David, Loop, all that.. but Big Black eluded me somehow. Never saw Husker Du either, even though I was at Glastonbury when they played their last UK show. :(

yeah, you bastard (squared, trebled, whatever) - very envious, one of the only bands I've seriously loved at the time that I never got to see... I can only imagine what a great night that must have been... reminds me that i read somewhere recently that 1987 was a nadir for music and it got me choking because all i can remember is some seriously great stuff: Big Black, Neubauten, The JAMMs, Sonic Youth, Buttholes, Swans, Spacemen 3, Loop, Head of David, Front 242, Sampling...

still, enough with these gigs - it's showing off of the best kind...
