Maybe that&#8217;s because I&#8217;m more fussy and cynical these days, but I think the simple fact is that there is just less self-published material being produced.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve been reading recently, anyway:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/savage10-217x3001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6251\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/savage10-217x3001-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"savage10-217x300\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Savage Messiah #10<br \/>\n<\/strong>London 2013 and things look bad. Laura Oldfield Ford paints a bleak picture of the Olympic legacy, with various subcultural tribes wandering the decaying urban wastelands of a post-apocalyptic Britain. Perhaps the most shocking indictment of all is the fact that these wretches seem to be reduced to painting <em>Flux of Pink Indians<\/em> graffiti on the walls&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/savagemessiahzine.com\/savstore.html\" target=\"_blank\">Order direct<\/a> or buy from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.housmans.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Housmans<\/a> in London.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/akcat_5495.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1762\" title=\"akcat_5495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/akcat_5495.jpg\" alt=\"akcat_5495\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aufheben #17<\/strong><br \/>\nBrighton-based marxist magazine which won&#8217;t be to everyone&#8217;s tastes -very text heavy, lots of footnotes, quite wordy. Still worth a read in places though &#8211; I have linked to <a href=\"http:\/\/libcom.org\/library\/kill-chill-aufheben-4\" target=\"_blank\">their piece on opposition to the Criminal Justice Bill <\/a>from the <a href=\"https:\/\/uncarved.org\/music\/apunk\/\" target=\"_blank\">uncarved &#8220;critical look at anarchopunk&#8221; pages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This issue includes some surprisingly readable interrogations of New Labour and the Socialist Workers Party\u00a0and their relationships with the &#8220;muslim community&#8221;. Good to see a worthwhile <em>class<\/em> analysis of the situation for a change.<\/p>\n<p>Order from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.akuk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">AK Distribution<\/a> or buy from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.housmans.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Housmans<\/a> in London.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1763\" title=\"issue4thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/issue4thumb.jpg\" alt=\"issue4thumb\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shook #4<\/strong><br \/>\nMusic mag &#8211; a bit too much focussed on soul, funk, hip hop, crate diggin&#8217; business for my liking but still pretty good as these things go. This issue has a nice feature on UK reggae soundsystems &#8211; largely inspired by the Musically Mad DVD. The piece has some nice quotes from Shaka&#8217;s box boy Norman Felix and Benji Roots of Brixton&#8217;s Supertone shop. Other features I found interesting include Greg Wilson on Legends &#8211; Manchester&#8217;s seminal electro club and a feature on Emory Douglas &#8211; graphic artist and Minster of Culture for the Black Panther Party.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shook.fm\/content\/shop\/\">Order direct.<\/a> Or download <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shook.fm\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/12\/SHOOK004-SAMPLER.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a free sample pdf<\/a> (for the first page or so of many articles).<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise it&#8217;s back to my archives for a print media fix. Or (bah) onto the net:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1769\" title=\"www38atwiki\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/www38atwiki.jpg\" alt=\"www38atwiki\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"  http:\/\/zinewiki.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/zinewiki.com\/<\/a> <em>was<\/em> a great resource about independent publishing &#8211; hell I even added some stuff on there about reggae fanzines. It now seems to be down, bah. I was looking forward to going back there and genning up on first wave Riot Grrl zines after listening to a compilation CD of the music Martin did for me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1772\" title=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/1.jpg\" alt=\"1\" width=\"178\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When zinewiki <em>was<\/em> up, browsing through lead me to discover that there is now <a href=\"http:\/\/wps.com\/archives\/HOMOCORE\/\" target=\"_blank\">an almost complete online archive of queer punk zine Homocore<\/a>. Perhaps worth comparing to Taqwacore, the relatively recent eruption of Islamic Punk which was apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/23\/us\/23muslim.html\" target=\"_blank\">inspired by a novel<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"  http:\/\/zinewiki.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Why do you think I do a blog?
