Having said that I expect to write a little less next week. In the meantime here are some updates:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/leejasper.blogspot.com\/2011\/03\/press-release-and-official-statement.html?spref=tw\" target=\"_blank\">Official Statement from the Emmanuel family<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Justice 4 Smiley <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/justiceforsmiley\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook page<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/Justice4smiley\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter feed<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cockney Translation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An interesting article in<a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/blogs\/johnson\/2011\/03\/smiley_culture?fsrc=scn\/tw\/te\/bl\/deathofatranslator\" target=\"_blank\"> The Economist<\/a> about Smiley&#8217;s use of language and its implications in wider culture.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How smiley was Smiley?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some contrasting views from Smiley&#8217;s neighbours:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.getsurrey.co.uk\/news\/s\/2089471_drugs_raid_reggae_star_lived_secluded_life\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Get Surrey<\/em> portray him as leading a &#8220;secluded life&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.voice-online.co.uk\/content.php?show=19160\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Voice<\/em> suggests he was a bit more up for it than that<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have not included these links for their gossip value alone &#8211; one of the critical things in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hackneyhistory.wordpress.com\/2011\/03\/12\/policing-in-hackney-1945-1984\/\" target=\"_blank\">Colin Roach<\/a> case was his portrayal by the police and in the media as &#8220;having a history of mental health problems&#8221; which was incorrect. I believe this then influenced the public&#8217;s perception of the circumstances surrounding his death and the investigation into it.<\/p>\n<p>The anonymous (police?) source in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/sol\/homepage\/news\/3470108\/Reggae-star-Smiley-Culture-stabs-himself-to-death-after-being-arrested-in-drugs-bust.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Sun<\/a> suggested that &#8220;Smiley must have thought he was going away for a long time  and decided he could not handle it.&#8221; Conversely, the Emmanuel family believe that Smiley expected to be acquitted and was &#8220;calm&#8221; only 25 minutes before his death.
