{"id":4847,"date":"2011-10-05T19:30:42","date_gmt":"2011-10-05T18:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/?p=4847"},"modified":"2012-03-08T22:37:19","modified_gmt":"2012-03-08T22:37:19","slug":"grange-hill-soundsystem-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/blog\/2011\/10\/grange-hill-soundsystem-session\/","title":{"rendered":"Grange Hill &#8211; soundsystem session"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;Only Glenroy&#8217;s records get played on Glenroy&#8217;s soundsystem!&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"730\" height=\"548\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OhBEsLNOQak?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Young &#8216;uns and those outside the UK may not know that Grange Hill was an eighties kids&#8217; TV series set in a London secondary school.<\/p>\n<p>It was hugely popular and responsible for lots of school children outside of London adopting comedy mockney accents.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d completely forgotten this 1984 episode featuring a reggae soundsystem, but here it is thanks to youtube and <a href=\"http:\/\/bloodandfire.co.uk\/db\/viewtopic.php?f=1&amp;t=39978\" target=\"_blank\">Ras Stan on the Blood &amp; Fire Board<\/a>. Glenroy flings down some raw rub a dub and lovers rock as a backdrop to the end of term shenanigins.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m amazed it hasn&#8217;t been sampled to death already, frankly.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"NME Soundsystem Splashdown feature 1981\" src=\"https:\/\/uncarved.org\/dub\/splash\/graphics\/covsmall.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"361\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Easy to forget how massive soundsystem was back then &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/uncarved.org\/dub\/splash\/\">this 1981 NME cover story featured all the big names &#8211; Jah Shaka, Fatman and Coxsone Outernational, alongside a directory of over 100 sounds from across London<\/a>. Alas, no mention of Glenroy, though!<\/p>\n<p>Reggae&#8217;s influence didn&#8217;t just appear in Grange Hill with Sir Glenroy Hi-Fi either &#8211; this reminded me of another episode in which a rasta pupil at the school did an exhibition about his faith which lead to a brief exchange with the Headmistress about Haile Selassie:<em> &#8220;to us, he is Jah!&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For a lot of suburban white kids these episodes of Grange Hill, and perhaps a 5th generation VHS tape of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncarved.org\/babylon\">Babylon<\/a> would have been splinters of light coming through doorways which lead to other worlds&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Only Glenroy&#8217;s records get played on Glenroy&#8217;s soundsystem!&#8221; Young &#8216;uns and those outside the UK may not know that Grange Hill was an eighties kids&#8217; TV series set in a London secondary school.
