I’m not saying that the Learning Trust in Hackney is the ultimate arbiter of hardcore or anything, but the daughter’s xmas party at nursery included Musical Chairs (and Statues) to the sound of ‘Egpytian Dance’ by Elephant Man. 🙂
yes yes y’all
Ian Penman back once again…The Goodrick-Clarke book is an essential read for anyone remotely interested in the subject – also a must have for anyone who has come into contact with the posturing of da black clad legions of occulture. If you do a search here you’ll find an early entry on his book about Savitri Devi as well.
ukd n
I should write a big thing about the UK-Dance party in Manchester here (but won’t – no time.). It was excellent. Massive thanks to Duggo for organising it and to Pete and Marina for crash space and to Paul Meme for being Paul Meme.
We rocked it – everyone else who followed us rocked it – harder!
One of the best nights out this year and indeed this Century so far.
Meme, you lazy wanker
It doesn’t look like Paul is ever going to get his shit together and post a review of the Dizzee Rascal gig at Sheffield, so here is what he wrote on UK-Dance about it. Posts only stay up for a fortnight though, so get it quick!
don’t lose the music
Big up the RNID. I think their dontlosethemusic.com campaign about tinnitus and “disco-deafness” is well worth checking out and supporting. If the cost of going to see dodgy power electronics bands is future hearing problems, then fore-warned is fore-armed.
Plus Louise who works for them is a mate of a mate and came to see me and Paul DJ earlier this year at the UK-D London bash, so she is (cough) “down” wit da programme.
Big up Hackney Libraries –
Eye:
David Toop – Ocean of Sound (I confess I skimmed this, but it’s damn fine even if the more classical ‘trad’ avant garde isn’t your bag)
Polly Toynbee – Hard Work (sort of “povery porn” – Polly goes to live on the minimum wage on a Council Estate and is shocked to find that people don’t spend a hundred quid in restaurants. Actually that’s a bit harsh – she does her stint and there is some alright analysis and some good stats)
Jon Savage – England’s Dreaming (pistols, talcy malcy. Great so far, but then everyone has already read this, no? Teds in Stamford Hill / outrage / 50s retro. Nicking guitars from Rod Stewart / 70s London pro-situs. Sorted).
Ear:
Elephant Man – Higher Level
Trinity – Shantytown Determination
Yabby You – Deliver Me From My Enemies
v/a – London is the Place for Me (Trinidadian Calypso in London 1950-1956)
v/a – Pure Urban Essentials
moan
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat-evah!
Big up Jason Aphasic for the first release on J U N K.
Possibly one of my records of the year. Two out and out hardcore junglist stormers (one of which was the climax to his last Sick & Twisted DJ set – features everything but the kitchen sink, including some utterly stoopid happy hardcore bits which are great). Plus two more downbeat tracks which are incredibly atmospheric and menacing – as if the Ambush records “style” (if that’s the right word for such a varied label) has been given a bit of space to breathe in. Essential stuff on first listen. Mp3s on the site.
WOEBOT
Big up Matt for sending me a nice CD of Woebot stuff in my hour of need. At first I was thrilled to find out it was some serious Merzbow-esque noise mash up business. Then I played it in my computer.
Includes his recent Resoance FM set – wicked – do some more in 2004!
sound sound
“Soundsystem” – my arse. 🙂
Although… hang on a minute! “SS”, “Hollow Earth”… it’s all beginning to fall into place!
