pay it all back

William Burroughs tells a good story about Hassan I Sabbah, the old man of the mountains, the head of the Assassins/Hashishin. The Assassins were infamous for not engaging in all out warfare with their enemies, but employing stealth and infiltration instead.

So when Alamout, the Assassins’ mountaintop HQ (situated in what is now the north of Iran) was under siege, they didn’t need to come out all guns blazing wild-west style. One morning the leader of the invading army woke up to find the handle of a dagger poking out of the ground outside his tent. He increased the guard. The next morning, there was a dagger sticking out of his bedpost. He doubled the guard again, including many of his most trustworthy agents inside his living quarters. The next morning, he found a dagger under his pillow. He realised what was in store for him when the sun rose again and ordered his troops to leave…

Many parallels have been (erroneously) drawn between Hassan I Sabbah and Osama Bin Laden. Here probably isn’t the place to get into all that, and it must be said that Uncle Bill’s take on all this is somewhat, uh, mytho-poetic and a-historical.

But that aside, there are some interesting parallels between the above story and the news yesterday that comedian Aaron Barschak managed to con his way into Prince William’s 21st birthday celebrations, dressed as Osama Bin Laden.

Perhaps, next time, not a kiss on both cheeks, but…?

The Hacienda Must Be Built

“I love talking to my nephews about the warehouse days of glory. They look at me like Uncle Albert telling his Navy stories. I dont think they believe the Hacienda actually existed… ive offered to take em to the site and show em 24Hour Party People but it just makes em yawn! Kids eh!”

Suddi Raval UK-Dance 23rd June 2003.

“You’ll never see the hacienda. It doesn’t exist.”

start ‘em young

Apparently the daughter squared up to a copper in Regent’s Park yesterday. She walked up to him, toe to toe, looked him up and down and then walked off – laughing.

She isn’t even two yet!

Funfair For The Common Man

Dubversion, denizen of Urban75 and The People’s Republic of Disco (a club which takes the “selector” role to its logical extreme – punters bring records which are then checked in and played by the DJ. Great idea which demystifies the whole DJ cult a little) is now blogging. Keep on it, mate!

I like the cut of his jibbe (sp?). And not just cos he sucks up to me, heh heh. He’s also about to unleash a dub steppers version of Bauhaus’ “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” on an unsuspecting world.

Actually I’ve been a little overwhelmed by all the praise for this blog, the uncarved.org web site and my mix cd since I came back from me hols. Must be doing something right, tho the trick is the discipline of carrying it on consistently.

shake the foundations mix ONLINE

The man like Marc Dauncey has kindly agreed to host my last mix.

You can download it here.

There were/are a few copies on CD floating about and you can read the tracklisting and sleevenotes here.

If, like me, you have a crappy internet connection or can’t listen to stuff at work, I might be persuaded to run off a few more of the CDs (particularly in exchange for other cool mixes or CDRs…).

Check out the rest of Marc’s site for some wicked mixes including Paul Meme’s legendary Nervous Ragga Mix, some nice reggae, and some serious mixes in the dark electronic mash up vein from Marc himself.

Currently wading through a ton of email, spam and post after a week away. Pretty cool, (apart from the spam, that is)
